Fundamental Bridge Analysis & Design Workshop Instructor: Jamal Elkaissi (FHWA) Course Description: This workshop is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration in cooperation with your local State Department of Transportation. The workshop will mainly provide new bridge designers the fundamentals of bridge analysis and design. The workshop will introduce the common bridge types and components, current bridge condition in the US, bridge failures, and bridge preliminary design requirements. It will explain the key steps for the final analysis and design of major bridge components, which should help new bridge designers gain fundamental bridge analysis and design knowledge. In addition, the workshop will briefly demonstrate the typical construction of foundation, superstructure, and deck placement, which can help new designers understand how a bridge is built. The training will be useful to emerging bridge designers with only a little job analysis and design experience. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course, participants should be familiar with: • Bridge types, components, conditions, and failure modes. • Bridge preliminary design (type/size/location (TS&L), hydraulic and geotechnical reports, etc.). • The AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (load combinations, limit states). • Bridge deck analysis and design. • Bridge superstructure analysis and design (prestressed concrete I-girder, steel plate girder, concrete segmental box girder). • Bridge substructure analysis and design (intermediate bents, abutments). • Bridge foundation analysis and design. • Bridge load rating and posting. • Bridge deck construction. • Bridge expansion and bearings
